With the Women’s game constantly growing, it’s no surprise that more statistics within the game are starting to emerge. However, the statistic we are looking at today could be viewed by some as frightening and worrying.
An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a rupture or sprain of this tough band of tissue that helps link your thigh bone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia). ACL injuries are most frequently sustained while playing sports (such as football) that involve sudden stops, quick changes of direction or jumping and landing. An ACL injury frequently results in a “popping” sound or sensation in the knee. It’s possible for your knee to swell, feel unsteady, and become excruciatingly painful.
Depending on the degree of your ACL injury, treatment options might range from rest and strengthening exercises to surgery, to repair the torn ligament and rehabilitation. The risk of an ACL injury may be decreased with the right exercise program.
This chance to reduce the risk of an ACL Injury is one of the reasons why Ilkley Town Women’s Football Team invited Complete Conditioning down to run an Injury Prevention Session for the team, as they suffered the loss of over 4 players last season due to ACL injuries.
The Statistics
The data has shown that in Elite Women’s Football over the past 12 months, 195 elite women footballers have suffered an ACL injury, of those between 25 and 30 players (an entire World Cup Squad) have missed this years Women’s World Cup due to an ACL injury. Another worrying statistic is that Female Footballers are six times more likely to sustain an ACL injury compared to Male Footballers.
